Advanced Surname Search

To search for a surname on the WebGene site, enter the surname you are searching for in the edit field. Select the mode you are using to search: exact surname spelling, soundex surname spelling, or regular expression surname spelling. The three different search modes enable more powerful searching capabilities. Click search and it will return the results of your search.

Alternatively, you can select one of the thumbnail letters to see a list of surnames beginning with that letter. There are two other thumbnails: NonAlpha and No Surname. The NonAlpha is the thumbnail for surnames which begin with something other than a letter. The No Surname lists all the individuals on the site who do not have a surname.

Exact Surname Search

The exact surname search method enables you to search for exactly what you enter in the search field. So if you enter MYER, it will find exactly that MYER. It will not match MEYER or MYERS for instance. Exact surname search method also offers the ability to use wildcards (*, ?). The * signifies any number of any letter. The ? signified one of any kind of letter. So if you enter MYER*, it will find MYER, MYERS and MYERHOFFER because the * was a wildcard or placeholder for 0 letters in the case of MYER, one letter (S) in the case of MYERS and sixe letters (HOFFER) in the case of MYERHOFFER. Also if you enter M?TZINGER, it will find MATZINGER and MOTZINGER because the ? is a place holder for the A or the O but not MORTZINGER because it is only a single letter placeholder. You can use more than one ? in a row as well such as M???R which would find MEYER, MEIER, MAYER, MAYOR, etc.

Soundex Surname Search

The soundex search method enables you to search for a surname which sounds like your surname but may not be spelled like it. To do a soundex search just type the surname to do a soundex search of and click Search. So if you enter MYER, it might find MYER, MEYER, MAIER, etc. You do not need to enter the soundex code (i.e. M560). The search engine does not take soundex codes. It alos does not take wild cards like the exact
search method.

Regular Expression Surname Search

The regular search method enables you to perform advanced searches for a surname.
